Jedward go Hawaiian

Friday, February 18th, 2011

An Hawaiian party just wouldn’t be, well, Hawaiian, without Hawaiian shirts. This month we’ve seen the X Factor stars ‘Jedward’ donning the attire for their starring roles in a TV advert for a comparison website. Jonathon and Edward Grimes lay on their sun loungers wearing matching yellow Hawaiian Shirts and sipping cocktails from Hawaiian style coconut cups. Jedward – as the twins are commonly known as – are fun-loving guys who love to party – maybe they headed off for a Luau of their own in their Hawaiian apparel – well, it would have been a shame to waste such high fashion, wouldn’t it?

What better way to chase away the winter blues than throwing a Hawaiian Party? You’ll feel instantly warmer and will get you in the mood for planning your summer holiday. So grab yourself a Limbo stick, a handle of Leis and a couple of Inflatable Palm Trees to get your Hawaiian Party plan rolling. Oh, and don’t forget your Jedward-esque Hawaiian Shirts. Aloha!

Hawaiian themed weddings

Monday, September 20th, 2010

grass skirtIf you’ve always dreamt of a colourful Hawaiian wedding on a paradisiacal island beach, there is one way to make it happen without spending your lifesavings on flying your family and friends half way around the world for your big day.

The answer is to hold your Hawaiian themed wedding right here in the UK.  Clearly you’ll want to pick a summer day with the strongest chance of good weather, and, this being Britain, it’s a good idea to have a marquee on standby just in case. Once you’ve set a date, its time to pick an attractive beach location to play host to your wedding. Somewhere on the south coast, such as Torquay or Brighton is perhaps ideal, and Torquay has the advantage of already having palm trees.

When you’re sending out the wedding invitations, let your guests know of your intentions, and give them some ideas for fancy dress wedding attire. For a low-key affair, grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts may be just the thing. For something a little more classy, long flowing tropical themed dresses for the women and white shirts for the men might be a better choice. Have ushers on hand to pass out traditional Hawaiian flower leis to guests as they arrive.

For the reception, a Hawaiian BBQ, or luau, followed by a beach party and tropical cocktails, can provide the perfect end to your Hawaiian themed wedding.

Famous Hawaiian shirt wearers

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

hawaiian shirtHawaiian shirts, also known as Aloha shirts on the islands, have a long history stretching back to the early 20th century. First designed in the 1930s by Ellery Chun, a Chinese merchant living in Waikiki, the Hawaiian shirt soon became a popular fashion item amongst US servicemen returning home from World War 2. From there, their popularity snowballed, hastened by the tourist rush to the Hawaiian islands in the 1950s. A number of high profile Hawaiian shirt wearers certainly helped to boost the credibility of the shirts also, as we shall discover.

Elvis Presley – Elvis loved Hawaii and as well as performing a number of legendary shows there, he acted in a number of movies set in and around the islands. He is reputed to have had a large collection of Hawaiian shirts, which he often donned during shows.

Weird Al Yankovic – A performer of a completely different nature, parody creator/singer Weird Al Yankovic has built a successful career out of a kooky and colourful persona, and is regularly featured in videos and on album covers wearing outlandish aloha shirts which match his zany personality.

Hunter S. Thompson - Legendary author of Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas and gonzo journalist Hunter S Thompson certainly had a uniquely exuberant dress sense, and would often compliment his aviator style glasses, hats and trademark cigarette holder with a wildly exotic Hawaiian shirt.

Tom Selleck – During the 80s, Tom Selleck popularised the Hawaiian shirt further with his depiction of a private investigator working in Hawaii, in the hit series, Magnum PI. His moustache was an unfortunate addition to the look.

Happy Hawaiian New Year

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

If you’re having a house party this New Year’s Eve, why not make it an occasion to remember by giving everything a Hawaiian fancy dress theme. As the snow continues to fall and festive travel plans for thousands of Britons are disrupted, bringing a little bit of tropical paradise to your own home is the perfect way to lift your guests’ spirits.

For fancy dress costumes think grass skirts, Bermuda shorts, Hawaiian shirts and flower garlands aplenty. You could even go as a man-eating shark!

If you’re feeling particularly brave this New Year’s Eve, you could even try holding a Hawaiian style barbecue amongst the snowmen in your back garden! Whether you choose to prepare your party food indoors or outdoors, Hawaiian cuisine offers a fine selection of tasty morsels for even the most conservative of party guests. Being a fusion of national dishes brought by immigrants to the island, notably Japanese, American, Chinese and Filipino, Hawaiian food is greatly varied and remarkably delicious. Barbecued fish is particularly popular and the ‘plate lunch’ is a staple of Hawaiian restaurants, consisting of two scoops of white rice, macaroni salad and an entree, such as Chicken Katsu, Beef Teriyaki or Hamburger Steak.

Give your home that typically Hawaiian feel by sprucing up the decor with a few palm trees, pineapple and coconut party decorations. A few Tiki god ornaments about the place also certainly couldn’t hurt your luck for the coming year. Round the night off with a bang in traditional Hawaiian style by setting off some firecrackers at midnight. Hau’ oli Makahiki Hou!
